However, he had wanted to move to New York because he wanted excitement in his life and had never felt the same in his town when he came back from the war. He desired a fresh start on the east coast working for the bond business, which involved the creation and distribution of bonds. Similarly, the new beginning also refers to Gatsby, as his life is mostly unknown and filled with secrets. For example, Gatsby’s past is only spoken of through rumors and as readers, we are unaware of what is true or false. More specifically, one party guest stated, …somebody told me they thought he killed a man onceit’s more that he was a spy during the war it couldn’t be that, he was in the American army during the war (Fitzgerald, p. 44). It would seem that Gatsby was attempting to making his past a mystery to people because he did not want anyone to know that his history included him being raised in poverty. Furthermore, Gatsby does not want the public to know how he had received his money from so he decided to keep everything a secret which left him nothing but a fresh start and a new beginning. In the seventh chapter, the blistering heat represents the growing tension between Gatsby & Tom Buchanan as they are both fighting for Daisy’s love. After Daisy and Gatsby initially meet, they decide to keep their relationship a secret. Daisy is dealing with the life-changing decision of staying with her husband and daughter or, leaving them for Gatsby. Tom begins to understand the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy by how they act around each other in front of him. Daisy mentions how Gatsby always looks so cool (Fitzgerald, 119), which provides enough proof for Tom. This quote also shows how Daisy feels happy and not of this world, while she is with Gatsby as she indicates she feels cool, while the weather is in fact extremely hot. Moreover, the scene where Daisy engages in a long stare with Gatsby conveys their love for one another to Tom. Gatsby’s calmness has helped him in the Buchanan’s house, However, when they go to New York, the heat coerces Tom to manipulate Gatsby and makes Gatsby very irritated, causing him to [look] as if he had killed a man.’ For a moment the set of his face could be described in just that fantastic way, (Fitzgerald, 134). The shift of temperament for Gatsby from calm to vexed is a significant change in his relationship with Daisy. This change causes Daisy to push herself away from Gatsby because this was not the person she knows nor fell in love with. In the ending of the book, the rain during Gatsby’s funeral represents the darkness, gloominess, and sadness the day brings because no one cares enough about Gatsby to show up to his funeral. Later, the rain washing over Gatsby’s casket represents his sins being washed away. Gatsby was not the most moral person, however, it is known that the blessed are the dead that the rain falls on…amen to that, (Fitzgerald, 175). Furthermore, many people who did come to Gatsby’s parties and pretended to be friends with him did not even show up to his funeral because of the rain, however, the rain only lasts temporarily. This symbolizes the friendship Gatsby had with these friends. The Great Gatsby used weather as a way to describe the mood of everyone throughout the whole book. In real life, the weather can affect someone to change their mood. This suggests that not only in a fictional book but also in real life, can someone become angry or sad when the weather is scorching hot or raining copiously.
