Workplace Gender Equality and Discrimination Laws Essay (Article)
Gender equality in the workplace may be described as providing an organizational environment that allows workers to attain their peak potential and to receive the due reward for their potential, in the absence of discrimination on the grounds of sex or any basis. Talent management is an important approach in attaining gender equality.
Equality has often been misunderstood as treating sexes in precisely the same way. However, real equality can be attained by treating people in different ways that are fair and based on their needs; however, these ways should be adjusted to the objectives and needs of the business. Over the years, discrimination law has slowly developed, such as the Equal Pay Act (1970), the Sex Discrimination Act (1975), and Equality Act (2010). However, attitudes and customs in the workplace and society at large do not change as a result of the change in the law. This has been and is still a gradual change.
Employers must ensure gender equality, to avoid biased and prejudicial decisions and actions in the workplace, legal costs, distorted employer reputation, and lost opportunities and productivity. Gender equality in the workplace is also important to achieve competitive benefits, as well as a complex and competitive worldwide economy.
