World War I in Literature Free Essay Example
Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner are two well-known and inquisitive authors who both have a diverse style of writing and take their own personal approach upon their writing which further creates two unique styles. Both authors use their own style within their works. Such works would be “In Another Country”.
The setting of “In Another Country” is set in Milan, Italy, most likely during World War I. “It was cold in the fall in Milan” The weather helps the author develop the setting in order to inform the reader of Milan.
“We walked the short way through the communist quarter because we were four together. The people hated us…” The social setting in the short story is also key to development. It depicts the hardships the foreigners, soldiers,and country must face.
There are several themes all intertwined within the story, “Another Country.” The setting is both supposed to be taken in a literal and figurative form. The words “another country” refer to the characters finding themself in another country as well as feeling isolation and as if they do not belong there.

‘Stretcher bearers came in all the time, put their stretcher down, unloaded them and went away.’ There is a somber rhythm to Hemingway’s description of this procession of wounded men, and it presents a striking and vivid image of the war. ‘And the ones who would not make war? Can they stop it?’
‘I do not know.” Hemingway’s novel is often seen as a protest against war, and the sentence expresses doubt over whether such protest can really help stop it.
The themes in “A Farewell to Arms” often show contradiction with each other. There are themes of war and love, masculinity and femininity, and courage and fear. “If people bring so much courage to this world the world has to kill them to break them, so of course it kills them. The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.” Henry and his fellow soldiers are often broken down and shaken to their core by the violence that surrounds them, despite their aims to be brave and heroic.

Where war offers acts of violence, torture, and murder, their love offers acts of sexuality that, while physical, couldn’t be further from the savagery of war.
Hemingway’s writing style is sometimes referred to as the Iceberg Theory. “Well, we were in it. Everyone was caught in it and the small rain would not quiet it. ‘Good-night, Catherine,’ I said out loud. ‘I hope you sleep well. If it’s too uncomfortable, darling, lie on the other side,’ I said. ‘I’ll get you some cold water. In a little while it will be morning and then it won’t be so bad. I’m sorry he makes you so uncomfortable. Try and go to sleep, sweet.” The general idea of the Iceberg Theory is that a writer should focus on a minimalist style without explicitly stating the underlying issues or themes. “I was asleep all the time, she said. You’ve been talking in your sleep” Essentially, the importance of a story lies beneath the surface and cannot be directly seen.
The setting in “A Rose For Emily” is in the town of Yoknapatawpha, a county in Mississippi in which Faulkner made up on his own. “Obligation upon the town, dating from that day in 1894… I have no taxes in Jefferson” The physical, cultural, and time setting all play an important role in “A Rose for Emily”. Right outside of Jefferson, Mississippi in the 1890s. ”It was a big, squarish frame house that had once been white, decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome style of the seventies…” The story also takes place in her house, a very “old money” type house, with a gothic infrastructure leading to the foreshadow of what will happen there.
The southern gothic themes in “A Rose for Emily” show the darker side of Faulkner’s writing, delving into the almost murder mystery type suspense of the short story. “The violence of breaking down the door seemed to fill this room with pervading dust. A thin, acrid pall as of the tomb seemed to lie everywhere upon this room decked and furnished as for a bridal: upon the valance curtains of faded rose color…” The symbolism from the rose tint on everything and the title is finally pulled in near the end, it takes beauty, love, and decay, somehow intertwining it. “The man himself lay in the bed.” This piece of evidence applies to theme because it shows how quick the story was turned upside down, it take the suspense that the reader was going through and twists it into a dark ending.
The different settings in As I Lay Dying contribute to the way different characters act in the book, this story also takes place in Yoknapatawpha county in Mississippi as do all of Faulkner’s others works. “Thee path runs straight as a plumb-line, worn smooth by feet and baked brick-hard by July, between the green rows of laid by cotton, to the cotton house in the center of the field, where it turns and circles the… feet in fading precision.” The deep description of surroundings provides a clear picture of the scene he is trying to get the reader to understand, giving more description than what really needs to be said but still taking from it a clear image of what their home looks like. “They put him on the train, laughing, down the long car laughing, the heads turning like the heads of owls when he passed.” Darl has kind of gone crazy by this point in the story, but the word choice he uses to describe his surroundings on the train are makes it easy for someone to draw out the scenario in their own head.
There are certain themes and elements tied into As I Lay Dying by Faulkner. “In a strange room you must empty yourself for sleep. And before you are emptied for sleep, what are you.” This confusing quote is implies that before you can sleep, you must forget all that you are, you have to give everything up before you can reach peace and solitude. “My mother is a fish.” Vardaman basically uses this to help him cope with his mother’s death, if she is a fish she needs to be let out of the box to swim away.
William Faulkner uses a very bold style of writing, applying southern gothic styles into his different works. “She did that for three days, with the ministers calling on her, and the doctors, trying to persuade her to let them dispose of the body… buried her father quickly.” The quote has very dark undertones, seeming as she wouldn’t let them bury her father even days after his death. “I feel like a wet wild seed in the hot blind earth” Not knowing exactly what this quote is necessarily supposed to mean, the reader could always take what they want out of it, but faulkner may mean something deeper, more insightful from the placement and use of the sentence.
The writing styles of the two authors greatly differ, from they way settings in their works are described to how the themes in each book play out. “The mountain that was beyond the valley and the hillside where the chestnut forest grew was captured and there were victories beyond the plain on the plateau… vine purple on the side of the house.” The description stays concise, given the choice between the two authors, the clear choice here would be Hemingway. “The front, the conical facade with the square orifice of doorway broken only by the square squat shape of the coffin on the sawhorses like a cubistic bug, comes into relief.” The amount of description in the quote differs from the first, it is less concise, taking the time to draw out every detail.
