The Wizard Of Oz Movie Review

The movie I have chosen to talk about is titled “The Wizard of Oz”. Over going each genre and carefully selecting which genre this movie falls under, I picked the Fantasy Genre. One scene in the film that sticks out to me in specific is when the character Dorothy meets the Scarecrow played by Ray Bolger. The song that was sang by this character, is called ‘’If I Only Had a Brain’’. Knowing the popularity of the film, this scene is well known for the people who have watched this. One other scene that stands out due to the reason why the movie starts out white and black, while Dorothy is still stuck in Kansas. As she makes her way over to fairy tale land there begins to show color lighting. The effect of color switching really has an overwhelming feeling for its viewer. In reference to our text a Fantasy film is a ‘’movie with unrealistic, superpowers, characters, and setting, taking place. This often causes an overlapping effect specifically with historical dramas and science fiction (Jacobs, 2014)’’. Identifying fantasy films are generally easy to figure out based on if something is real, unrealistic, or scientifically not possible. Fantasy films allow viewers to escape their own reality and entertains the viewer. When a fantasy film is fiction, that does not stop the viewer from learning anything as a real-life lesson through the film.

The convention is a quest or journey of a fantasy that begins with a fictional place called the Oz. When Dorothy encounters the Wicked Witch of the West and the Witch of the North, she is set upon a journey to seek out the Wizard in hopes of setting things back to the way they were. I feel that these types of movies often take similar routes as far as plot is concerned and because of this The Wizard Of Oz met the expectations of its genre.

The Wizard of Oz has many scenes where Dorothy faces many obstacles. Through these events she meets three special characters a scarecrow, tinman, and lion. The brain, heart, and courage which needs to be fulfilled in order to set her back home. She also meets tiny people who go by the name Munchkins. This film is on its face, pure escapism, where characters may live in an imaginary setting or experience situations that break limitations of real world’’ (Jacobs, 2014).
