The Topic Of Society With Hate In George Orwell’s 1984

In our readings and discussions of George Orwell’s novel 1984, the topic of society with hate has been a significant issue. In 1984, the Party enforced a two minutes hate. So every day, people gather and spend two minutes screaming at a video or picture of an enemy to the Party. The primary purpose is to unify the people against the enemies of the Party, whereas in today’s society, we have hated that is most commonly seen online. I believe that an organization can survive with hate, but it is the way that we display that hate that can determine if a society can survive hatred.

‘Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.’ Winston seems to have more knowledge and seems to look at the hate in a different way than O’Brien. Like the other Party members, understand their purpose in engineering society in the way they did. As he says, power is its end, and the success of the Party is in that it’s made up of people who understand this and don’t kid themselves about their motives and aims. O’Brien can follow Winston because Winston seeks to know why and how things became this way, and even sympathizes with this desire, though he is ultimately determined to destroy it. It is in satisfying Winston’s curiosity that he accomplishes this. He lets him know that there is no chance society will ever evolve beyond the arrangement they have created by creating the three-caste system, ensuring total surveillance and thought control, and making sure that perpetual war focuses all production and emotion towards victory over an external threat. Telling him the truth about it all is the best of letting him know just how hopeless his situation is. O’brien believes that a society of hate can last for a long time because ultimate people have been brainwashed for a very long time. The people have become so accustomed to the way of life, that the behavior that they show is entirely reasonable to them. In today’s society, the idea that they act is not very common.

Throughout the book, O’Brien’s defining characteristic is his dogmatic belief in the Party. He believes that so long as someone is committed to the Party, ‘then all that they are will continue to be so long as the Party exists.’ He believes that Big Brother will live forever. The Party has no grand mission or purpose beyond obtaining power for power’s sake. According to O’Brien, ‘If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face — forever.’ What this means is that the society that they are living in is not going to change unless there is a change. Without a change, society will stay the way that it is. It is usual for a human to blind themselves with personal victories. This meaning that the thrill of winning or being better than another person or group is better than building relationships with one another. In the book, it is very prominent throughout the parties that the ultimate goal is to win. People seem to show more interest in themselves and their victories than the people around them. Because they have been accustomed to this for so long, it’s going to continue throughout the next generations unless there was a change. So yes, the intoxication of power and the thrill of victory is enough motivation for people to continue living without friendship or love.

As of 2019, there is so much change that has happened to this society. This being with hate and the way that it is displayed. Social media has played a significant role in many people’s lives and the way that we communicate and ‘define’ others. Hate is inevitable, but the way that we display it to others and for others to see is not unavoidable. We live in such a society where many peoples outlets for hate and love remains online/the internet. I have grown so accustomed to this lifestyle that it is almost normal. If there is no hate or evil in society, I don’t think that it can survive. I think that there needs to be somewhat of a balance between love and hate. It would not be suitable for a society only to have love and only have hatred. There are going to be problems if an organization is solely based off of one thing, this being between love and hate in society. Culture is never going to be perfect than a community cannot function correctly because humans are not perfect. Humans are not programed to where they can act a certain way or look the other way on a situation. We are all individually different, and we all come from different backgrounds, parents, and lifestyles. ‘You believe that reality is something objective, external, existing in its own right. You also believe that the nature of reality is self-evident. When you delude yourself into thinking that you see something, you assume that everyone else sees the same thing as you. However, I tell you, Winston, that reality is not external. Reality exists in the human mind and nowhere else. Not in the individual mind, which can make mistakes, and in any case soon perishes: only in the mind of the Party, which is collective and immortal. Whatever the Party holds to be the truth, is the truth. It is impossible to see reality except by looking through the eyes of the Party. That is the fact that you have got to relearn, Winston. It needs an act of self-destruction, an effort of the will. You must humble yourself before you can become sane.’ When it comes to our political situation, we have to remember that not everyone is going to agree on all on the same thing or person. Maybe one year there might be more people who are in favor of a specific person but another year the total opposite.

When it comes to politics as a whole, we are never all going to agree on the same proposals or the same persona, and that’s just how it is always going to be. However, I do think that hate that comes from politics is typical because not everyone on is going to agree on everything, and there will be proposals or laws that are going to upset people. When it comes to hate crimes and racial profiling; those are things that are inevitable without a substantial change. It is something that is going to happen, and people are going to continue to experience. It is not something that is acceptable and should not be allowed, but it is not in our control but as a whole. We are not going to be able to make a substantial change unless we make a change happen.
