The Monster As The True Villain In Frankenstein

January 8, 2021 by Essay Writer

The play Frankenstein is by Philip Pullman who adapted it from the original novel by Mary Shelley. In the play, Victor Frankenstein, the scientist, obtained body parts of dead corpses, and used the power of electricity to bring them to life. Throughout the play, it is evident that even though Victor’s doings were mistakes, the true villain of the play is The Monster. The decisions the monster made were acts of revenge that one that a villain would do. The monster did horrible things to Victor, he wanted revenge for creating and abandoning him. He had killed his loved ones, forced Victor to try to kill him and he threatened Victor to create a mate for him or else he would impair him. The things he did to Victor were all to make him suffer, and at the end he accomplished it by Victor dying.

The Monster was created by Victor, and he wanted to hurt his creator for creating him, making him suffer. First of all, The Monster got abandoned by his creator, and he didn’t know why. He learnt that he left him due to his looks. Whenever a person saw him, he would get tortured with horror. Soin returned to abandoning him; he killed his little innocent brother, William, and his future wife, Elizabeth. “I killed your brother” it says on page 43, which is said by a monster. “Before Frankenstein could stop him, the monster leapt toward Elizabeth and seized her by the throat.’ and “The Monster, with horrible snarls of rage, strangles her and drops her lifeless on the floor”. These quotes all show the monster admitting that he murdered Victor’s little brother and him slaughtering Elizabeth. The reasons for his doings were because he wanted love but couldn’t obtain it, so he wanted revenge from his creator.

The evil monster made Victor get so hurt, that Victor thrived to destroy his creation. Furthermore, the Monster had killed all his loved ones, which made Victor depressed and mad at him. So he swore, “I will find you. However long it takes.” Victor now had a new ambition, to destroy the monster. The monster laughed and replied, “I’ll make you follow me to the coldest, wildest, emptiest places in the world! I’ll see you freeze and starve and suffer – and I’ll laugh…” He then, despite his health, chased him. Then he made Victor suffer on the land of the cold arctic, and eventually Victor died. “for Frankenstein himself lay dead before him”. This shows that all of the monsters doing all led to make a scientist die slowly, for creating him, and that he got killed by the ambition of killing it.

Victor, already sad from a loss, gets threatened by The Monster to create a bride, or he will impair him. Finally, the Monster kept on trying to get loved, but he was simply rejected by the people of every town. He threatened him to make a companion, so that he wouldn’t have to encounter him again. “In two years’ time, it will be ready. But if I hear of you before then, I will destroy and that will be the end”. This is evident, and it shows that the monster ran out of choices, and resolved to threaten him, which made him look villainous.

To conclude, the Monster is the true villain of the play despite Victor Frankenstein’s mistakes. The monster had made Victor suffer, killed all of Victor’s friends and family, made Victor slowly die in the freezing areas of the Arctic, and he threatened him to create a being like him. These are all things that a villain would do and display why he is the true villain of this play.
