In the story of “The Scarlet Ibis”, James hurts presents the Doodle’s disability to express that pride can cause people to be cruel even to those they love.

Therefore, the narrator was embarrassed by his brother because of the disabilities that he has. To be more specific, the narrator states that, “When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn’t walk” (hurts 172). As Doodle started to get older and got general understandings, he was still the same physically and on the other side, the narrator was embarrassed by his brother because he couldn’t walk like a normal kid at that age. The Narrator has to help him with most of the stuff that Doodle needs to do and had to carry him around which made the narrator be more embarrassed. Meanwhile, The Narrator was making plans to kill doodle as it states “ So I began to make plans to kill him, by smothering him with a pillow”(hurts 169). Although Doodle was the narrator’s brother, he still made plans to kill him with a pillow just because of the pride that the narrator had which made it so unbelievable. if the narrator would have seen him from just heart and believed that he is his brother and that he needs to take care of him even though he had disabilities. The Narrator’s pride was so important for himself that it made his feelings to be less important than his pride for his loved ones.

In Conclusion, the importance of pride can cruel the people who you love the most just as in the end the narrator did the same thing that he made Doodle walk and help him every day to walk just because of his pride. The narrator’s pride was so much important for himself that he didn’t think about his own brother. The Narrator wanted a brother but when Doodle was born, everyone in the family thought that he would not live. As doodle’s family expected that doodle would not live so long and so his dad started making caffein. Doodles Aunt Nicey was positive about Doodle that he would live just because she believed “he was born in caul and coals was made from Jesus’s nightgown” Page169. At that point pride that aunt Nicey had didn’t affect her love for and doodle’s disabilities. The narrator wanted Doodle to be normal in which he helped him with walking, running and feeding. As Doodle started walking, the narrator started to feel comfortable because now he would not be embarrassed by his brother’s disabilities but he still thought that Doodle is not trying as hard as possible. To sum it all up, Doodle’s disability represents the storm and it tells how Doodle was so close to death and how he got out and he is still alive.

Summarizing, the importance of pride can cruel the people who you love the most just as in the end the narrator did the same thing that he made Doodle walk and help him every day to walk just because of his pride.
