The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was written in 1875 by Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, his pen name. The 257-paged book is narrated by the author and walks through the life of a young boy named Tom Sawyer. It takes place in St. Louisburg, Illinois, and gives the reader a view into Tom’s life with his friends and his adventures.

Tom is the main protagonist in this book. He is a mischievous child and looks up to the town vagabond, Huck Finn, for good times. He does what he wants and annoys Aunt Polly but he still loves her dearly. Tom loves playing with his friends and going on adventures in things like being “pirates” or “robbers”. Tom occasionally even has a “gang meeting” with his “fellow gang members”. He is very clever and is able to get friends to do work for him. Manipulating his way around he always can get out of a sticky situation. Tom’s love for Becky Thatcher is shown throughout The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Whenever she is around he always tried to show off and exhibit his personal skills. Most importantly, Tom, although he plays pranks and annoys his aunt sometimes, really is a kind-hearted person. Tom does care for his aunt and think about her (although sometimes he forgets to think).

Becky, Tom’s love, is shown in the book to have beautiful blue eyes and yellow hair. Tom of course finds this quite appealing and finds the need to show off. Becky can sometimes get mad at Tom for things he does such as when he was attempting to make her get jealous by flirting with another girl. Although they do have their differences Becky still is willing to follow Tom to the middle of the earth (wink wink) and loves him too. Huckleberry Finn is Tom’s best friend. The dirty and practically orphaned boy loves playing with Tom and enjoys his adventures. Huck loves pretending with Tom and joins his “gang”. Injun Joe is the antagonist of the story. Injun Joe is a criminal who is mad at Tom. He hides in the village as the Dumb and Deaf Spaniard. Tom and Huck must figure out his plan and help the authorities catch him. Aunt Polly, Tom’s aunt, works hard at trying to teach him manners. She attempts to keep him clean and keep him in order (although most of the time that doesn’t work out). Tom may annoy her and get her worried but he still cares for her.
