Review of My Own Version of “Nosedive” Episode

A tiny interaction, contact lenses, and an app are used to rank one another. In a society where these things determine where you stand socially as well as in society, it determines your rights and basic needs it is ranked by a 0 to 5 rank. A higher rank meaning more doors of opportunity’s open, while a medium and lower rank is difficult to be part of this type of society. In my own version of the episode “Nosedive”, it will be a little different from the original based on three factors that will affect the circumstances of the main character which are the self-fulfilling prophecy, self-concept and reflected appraisals. Also, the interaction with another character based on my own view. Last but not least how my values and roles would be affected by the world portrayed in the “Nosedive” episode.

Throughout the episode, the main character starts to slowly struggle with the circumstances that are being presented upon her. Based on these three concepts which are the social class identity, self-concept, and reflected appraisal. I think my perspective would be somewhat the same as the main character, but in certain aspects differently, like the way she handled things. These three concepts can be seen throughout the episode like social class identity. In my own version, social class identity would be important but not important when communicating with others, for example, if I was someone with a high ranking or close to a high ranking it shouldn’t matter that I would be communicating with someone with a lower ranking. This concept could have changed some circumstances in the original like for example the main characters coworker who started to have a really low-rank people wouldn’t talk to him, and when the main character did the people other people started to lower her score. This to me in a way it takes away our way to communicate with others and see their own viewpoints, it’s like as if there was a wall between lower and higher class.

The second concept which is the self-fulfilling prophecy, for my own perspective I think this concept would be important since the main character did have an expectation for herself if that was my expectation as well the outcome would be different. Starting where the interaction with the brother ended I would apply “your emotions affect your actions” with this concept firstly the expectations is to go to the wedding and leave with a higher rating, secondly this is where I would apply emotions affect your consequences since I would have left mad from the interaction with my brother but I wouldn’t have argued back so I wouldn’t be as mad and affect the other things to lower down my score. Also knowing the expectations other people have in that society I would remember the rules if my expectation was so high like having a quite tone outside, then again, my score wouldn’t have lowered causing me to go to the airport in a calm state of mind.

Lastly the self-concept, which shows a distorted self-evaluation of perfectionism and social expectations in this certain type of society it would be hard to not have these self-concepts especially if you are in the lower/ middle end of society. But in order to make this a different version the distorted self-concept can’t always be there forever, we will have to turn it into a positive one. A relationship that really caught my eye was Lacie and her brother Ryan relationship, because of their last interaction. As Naomi’s wedding started to get closer Ryan calls her out for being a phony, he doesn’t like the idea of rating everyone on everything and then things start to go downhill in their relationship. The way she should have properly engaged with him in this discussion/ situation is looked at his behavior first. I noticed that when Ryan asked her about what rate she is hoping to get out of this whole thing she got mad and used something against him, which of course was going to cause an argument between them, I would of just not used the “you” language, I think there are two things she could have possibly done which are joke about it, or just listen and ignore it. This could have led to different outcomes compared to the original one, but would they have the same damage as things progressed?

Another behavior that I think could have changed would be how the argument ended, you could see Ryan standing there with anger and regret while Lacie comes in again and leaves angry and rates him with a low scare in return he does the same. If Lacey wouldn’t have rated him at all and just walked out, Ryan wouldn’t have rated her either. My perceptions on the world of right now would be greatly impacted based on the world that is portrayed in “Nosedive” would change completely, because in the world of “Nosedive” because it’s based on a world of social media, compared to right now social media is big but not to the point where it is consuming your life. I wouldn’t really try to be part of the “higher class” or “medium” I’d be considered a lower class like the main characters brother or even lower, because I’m not really used to using social media, like many teenagers my age are more involved with social media, always posting and caring how many likes they get on a post or picture of themselves. I understand that in the world of “Nosedive” it is more than popularity on social media since basically your whole needs/life are based on social media.

Another reason why I would be impacted because I think all the mental health problems would definitely increase for many people like anxiety and depression because of the demand to do things in the way other people perceive as perfect, it would also completely have people put on a different mask. Also, self-expression I think would be a big one for me, I would have to think if the things I enjoy and post would other people like and give me a good or decent rating for me to be able to live in this type of world.

To sum up, my own version of the episode “Nosedive” is different from the original based on three factors that will affect the circumstances of the main character which are the self-fulfilling prophecy, self-concept and reflected appraisals. Also, the interaction with another character based on my own view. Last but not least how my values and roles would be affected by the world portrayed in the “Nosedive” episode. A world where social media is the backbone of society, and your lifestyle and friendships depend on this rating, would you be able to handle living in such a world?
