Huck Decision to save Jim
Pg 205
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn By Mark Twain
” alright then, I’ll go to hell – and tore it up”
Twain satirism is in this as well because Huck who is saving Jim is doing the right thing but because of the priciniples he grew up with it wrong what he is doing

This twains satirism in this as well because Huck thinks that he should waste his time on someone who is less superior to him, and less smarter then him, but in reality Jim is more wiser then Huck

Huck acknowledges Jim’s intellect only as a “******”
Pg 83
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn By Mark Twain
“Well, he [Jim] was right; he was most always right; he had an uncommon level head, for a ******.”
This quote shows the same satirism as well because even though Huck is praising him for being quite smart, he still thinks he is more superior to him because no matter what he is still a ****** in Huck’s eyes

Huck apologizing to Jim
Pg 91
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn By Mark Twain
“It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself up to go and humble myself to a ******—but I done it, and I warn’t ever sorry for it afterwards, neither.”
Even though Huck was in the wrong here, Huck could not bring himself to apologize to Jim which shows the absurdity racism brought to this society because Huck still believes he is more superior

Human v Object
Pg 91
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn By Mark Twain
“Jim said it made him all over trembly and feverish to be so close to freedom. Well, I can tell you it made me all over trembly and feverish, too, to hear him, because I begun to get it through my head that he was most free—and who was to blame for it? Why, me.”
Since Jim is a slave, hearing himsays words about freedom makes huck kind of scared because he has never heard of a slave talking about freedom before. But the humor in this is that Jim was always free in the first place but due to slavery and the belief of racism, he was not. But those two things aren’t real rather they were made up by other human being which is absurd

Pg 216
Huck disappointed in Tom
“I’m bound to say Tom Sawyer fell, considerable, in my estimation. Only I couldn’t believe it. Tom Sawyer a ****** stealer!”
Twain satire is involved in this as well, because what huck is calling him is kind of a insult but in reality it is not rather it is a compliment since he is helping another human being

The Wilks Family crying about the “******” family
Pg 178
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn By Mark Twain
“I thought them poor girls and them ******s would break their hearts for grief; they cried around each other, and took on so it most made me down sick to see it. The girls said they hadn’t ever dreamed of seeing the family separated or sold away from the town.”
Huck feels sick that these girls who show love to the slave, because by caring for them the girls in a way believe that the ****** family is equal with them. To Huck however he believes what he is seeing is unnatural because he never saw anyone show so much compassion to slaves

Object v Human
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn By Mark Twain
Pg 152
“I do believe [Jim] cared just as much for his people as white folks does for their’n. It don’t seem natural, but I reckon it’s so.”
Even though Huck believes that Jim cares for his people as much as white folks did, it didnt feel natural toi Huck because to him slaves are mere objects and objects should have feeling compared to whites because that would make them equal. This shows the absurdity of racism from twain

Dehumanization
Pg 55
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
“Yes—en I’s rich now come to look at it. I owns myself, en I’s wuth eight hund’d dollars. I wisht I had de money, I wouldn’ want no mo’.”
Since Jim is black and a slave he is given much and all he wants right now is 800 dollars which quite alot back then but he will never get that due to who he is since he is lives in a society that dehumanize his kind.

Huck’s prank on Jim
Pg 61
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
“I killed him, and curled him up on the foot of Jim’s blanket, ever so natural, thinking there’d be some fun. “
Huck is playing this prank on Jim by exploiting his superstitious nature. Huck is dehumanizing Jim by not caring if Jim’s feeling will get hurt in the process, because toi Huck Jim is not a who but rather a what since he is a slave

Dehumanization
Pg 251
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
Tom and Huck put all sorts of creatures in Jim’s hut which agitates him. Jim then goes on to say says that there isn’t any room for him, and the creatures are bother him when he tries to sleep. The spiders and rats bite him, and also after the boys saw the legs of his bed all three eat the sawdust together to hide the evidence, which gives them all terrible stomachaches. After this, he says he never wants to be a prisoner again
In this quoteTom and Huck are putting all these creatures in his room so he actually looks like he was in a real prizon cell, and their having fun with that, but at the same jim isn’t, he ios being abused by these boys who dont even if he likes what their doing to him or not. Even though he is a grown man they do not treat him that way.

Tom’s prank on Jim
Pg 18
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
Tom wants to tie Jim to the tree for fun, but Huck objects because he doesn’t want Jim waking up. So instead om slips into the kitchen and takes three candles and leaves 5 cents to pay. Tom then takes off Jim’s hat, and places it on a tree branch above Jim’s head. Jim later on believes he is bewitched and wears a nickel as a token around his neck for the rest of his life.
In this quote they do not dehumanize Jim by playing a prank on him, yet even though he is much older and wiser then them

Huck’s inner conflict
Pg 203
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
“And then think of ME! It would get all around that Huck Finn helped a ****** to get his freedom; and if I was ever to see anybody from that town again I’d be ready to get down and lick his boots for shame. That’s just the way: a person does a low-down thing, and then he don’t want to take no consequences of it”
Huck believes what he is doing is wrong and that everyone will shame hbim for what he has done but he is doing the right thing actually, but due toi thse society firm belief on racism where they believe they are more superior to Jim and “his kind”, Huck feels guilty.

Jim wants to save his children
Pg 94
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
“Here was this ******, which I had as good as helped to run away, coming right out flat-footed and saying he would steal his children—children that belonged to a man I didn’t even know; a man that hadn’t ever done me no harm”
Huck stiole Jim out of slavery but what is shocking him is that he wants to save his children as well, but to Huck, the those children belong to another master not Jim even though they are his own kids which shows the absurdity rascism does to this society, because slaves are only tools, family doesn’t matter to the whites.

Making the Blacks the scapegoats
Pg 172
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
“Because Mary Jane ‘ll be in mourning from this out; and first you know the ****** that does up the rooms will get an order to box these duds up and put ’em away; and do you reckon a ****** can run across money and not borrow some of it?”
This shows mark twain;’s humor because the duke and duaphlin are making blacks the scapegoats here, saying that they are theives while in reality those two are the really theives

Jim’s reward money
Pg 200
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
“Well, I RECKON! There’s two hunderd dollars reward on him. It’s like picking up money out’n the road.”
This qoute is talking Jim, where these people basically believe that he is basically a 200 reward nothing else, and this describes as more of an object then a human

Pg 200
Humans vs Objects
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
“I liked the ****** for that; I tell you, gentlemen, a ****** like that is worth a thousand dollars—and kind treatment, too.”
The doctor even though is praising Jim , still thinks of him as a “******” and that he should be worth more and be treated better, the humor in this is that no human being is worth anything even though doctor said Jim should be worth more, no human being is worth anything and that is what Twauin is trying to show but due racism and slavery it makes people believe that they can list prices on other people

Pg 85
Huck and Jim’s arguement
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
“Well, it’s a blame ridicklous way, en I doan’ want to hear no mo’ ’bout it. Dey ain’ no sense in it.””Looky here, Jim; does a cat talk like we do?”

This shows mark twain satire because Jim who is a slave and understands his place still believes that everyone is the same, yet if everyone is the same why is he is slavery

Pg 3
Huck has no principles
THE CONSCIENCE OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN
By Jonathan Bennett
“In his earliest years Huck wasn’t taught any principles, and the only ones he has encountered since then are those of rural Missouri, in which slave-owning is just one kind of ownership and is not subject to critical pressure. It hasn’t occurred to Huck to question those principles. So the action, to us abhorrent, of turning Jim in to the authorities presents itself clearly to Huck as the right thing to do.”
Jonathan Bennet in this quote basically saying that since HGuck grew up in a society where it didn;’t teach him any principles, turingin Jim seems to be the right thing to do. This is then what Twain is trying to show that due to this society, it affects not only Huclk but everyone sense of judgement who lives there and this all because of racism

Pg 95
Huck inner conflict to give up Jim or not
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
“I was paddling off, all in a sweat to tell on him; but when he says this, it seemed to kind of take the tuck all out of me. I went along slow then, and I warn’t right down certain whether Iwas glad I started or whether I warn’t. When I was fifty yards off, Jim says: ‘Dah you goes, de ole true Huck; de on’y white genlman dat ever kep’ his promise to ole Jim.’ Well, I just felt sick. But I says, I got to do it-I can’t get out of it.”
Huck feels sick because he is going against his own kind, betraying them by helping Jim. Though this “sick feeling” Huck felt was all created by the belief of racism, which twain shows the absurdity of it, since it was a belief not a real thing, and it was destroying the society back then and continues to still do so even after the civil war when slavery was over

THE CONSCIENCE OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN
By Jonathan Bennett
Pg 3
Sympathy v Morality
“So Huck enables Jim to escape, thus acting weakly and wickedly-he thinks. In this conflict between sympathy and morality, sympathy wins.”
Bennet goes on to say that the only reason why Huck helped Jim was out of sympathy not because he thought it was, which preposterous because he was doing was good but he didn’t thinks because of how he grew up and the belief of racism that was ingrained in his and everyone elese’s lives who lived in this society

The Cylinder-Head Episode in ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN By Joseph Church
Pg 302
Cylinder-head Incident
“I disagree . First, Huck uses the epithet with Aunt Sally just as he does with the duke, to satisfy and thus manipulate the interrogator. Second, Huck cannot leave it at “No’m” because he rightly surmises that the explosion
of a cylinder head often results in serious injury”
In this quote Church is showing that Huck is exploiting racism because he knows Aunt Sally would not care if a “******” died in the explosion. Twain shows the absurdity in racism in this quote since nobody cares a fellow human being has died.

Huck Finn the Inverse Akratic: Empathy and Justice by Chad Kleist
Pg 258
Huck’s Inner Conflict
“Huck has a conflict between his reason and desires- where he believes the former is correct and the latter wrong. Inverse akratics follow their desires, even though they believe their desires are wrong. However, in doing so, they have performed the correct act.”
Chad Kleist author of this article, that Huck conflict throughout this book is internal and this was made possible because of racism. In a way Kleist is ageeing that that Huck is not to blamefor his actions or beliefs, because they were all made possible because of racism, which is ridiculous because racism is controlling them but it is not real.

Huck saving Jim, from Slave catchers
Pg 95
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
“He’s white”
Even though Huck saves Jim in this quote from the men, he could barely do it, because he believes that he is running away with someone elses property and the guilt was eating him. Twain is making fun of racism because he showing how Huck who believes he is stealing something is actually saving someone, but racism makes him think he is doing something bad.

Jim shown as a human
Pg 4
Huck, Jim, and American Racial Discourse
DAVID L. SMITH
“Indeed, his portrayal of Jim contradicted every claim presented in Jefferson’s description of the “Negro.””
Smith is explaining that Twain describes “the negroes” with qualities that whites have, but according to racism they are not equal with the whites. Twain is making fun of their belief of racism, since both are humans and they all retain the same qualities. This then shows twain’s satire towards the antebellum southern society and the post reconstruction period he lived who still retains a negrophobic climate

Pg 186
Irony of Jim’s freedom
“”Slave” was a label Jim could outrun. “******” was not.”
In this quote by Cassander L. Smith is showing the irony Mark Twain is trying to explain in his book, where Jim is trying to free himself, but in the end he cant free himself from being a “******” a term created by racism.

How Huck felt after writing the letter
Pg 204
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
“I felt good and all washed clean of sin for the first time I had ever felt so in my life, and I knowed I could pray now”
Huck feels good because he believes that by sending the letter to Miss Watson about Jim whereabouts, he is doing the right thing. But that would be actually wrong, because he would be sending Jim back to slavery, and since racism makes him think less of Jim, he doesn’t care if Jim will be mad if he does this. He thinks this is the best thing to do, and this kind of mentality was created due to the belief of racism, which Twain is showing how absurd and ridiculous it is.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn promotes racism in society
Pg 21
The Case against Huck Finn by John Wallace
“Huckleberry Finn has not been successful in fighting race hate and prejudice, as its proponents maintain, but has helped to retain the status quo.”
John Wallace is critiquing Mark Twain for ever righting a book like this, since he believes it is too ofensive to anyone of African descent. Though what he doesn’t understand is that Twain is not trying to promote racism, but rather show, the reader, the absurdity brought by racism

Revealing Aunt Sally’s true self
Pg 3
Race and Reading: The Burden of Huckleberry Finn By Frances W. Kaye
“Although the exchange between Aunt Sally and Huck is an ironic one that distinguishes Twain’s utter condemnation of slavery as a system that has warped a good person into accepting the complete dehumanization of a whole race of people.”
Even though Twain portrays Aunt Sally as a kind and sweet character, he wants to remind the readers that like anyone else in this time, she still does not believe she is equal with the blacks treating them like objects. This shows the reader how ridiculous racism can make people and he wants people to understand that.

Irony of freedom in America
Pg 5
Huck, Jim, and American Racial Discourse
DAVID L. SMITH
“Indeed, the novel suggests that real individual freedom, in this land of the free, cannot be found. “American civilization” enslaves and exploits rather than liberates.”
This is the reason why Twain uses satire towards slavery and racism because it is ironic to think that our country was founded on freedom, but because of racism this land is no longer free,

“The Use of Stereotypes in Huck Finn
Pg 5
Huck, Jim, and American Racial Discourse
DAVID L. SMITH
“Twain does indeed use racial stereotypes here. That practice could be excused as characteristic of the genre of humor within which Twain works.”
Twain uses Humor towards racial stereotypes in order justify the stupidity it brought to the antebellum southern society and the society twain lived in currently

Human v Object
Pg 5
Huck, Jim, and American Racial Discourse
DAVID L. SMITH
“Jim is not “the Negro.” Jim is Jim”
By attacking racism throughout this novel, Twain shows us, and Huck that Jim is not a negro, because a negro object and Jim is described as more of a human. In a way Huck is us, the readers, and as the story progresses both of us start to see Jim as less of a negro and more of a human

Jim’s advice To Huck
Pg 29
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
“to res’ easy en let de ole man take his own way”
This was one of the few times where Jim would give great advice to Huck. Therefore by giving out advice to Huck this showed that Jim was intelligent which went against what people in the pre civil war era believed ******s where

Religion v Racism
Pg 204
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
“Here was the Sunday school, you could a gone to it; and if you’d done it they’d a learnt you, there, that people that acts as I’d been acting about that ****** goes to everlasting fire”
Twain’s satirism is involved in this quote because a Church is suppose to teach kids to love all creatures since they are all god’s creations, but this Sunday school is teaching kids to look down upon blacks, and making the kids believe that blacks are less superior

Huck’s Ignorance
Pg 261
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
“I knowed he was white inside”
This correlates with Twain satirism because Huck is gradually accepting Jim only because he believes that inside he is white like him, so even though Huck spent so much time with Jim and understands better, the belief of racism is still far ingrained in him

Huck is conflicted whether or not to give up Jim
Pg 94
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
“I was sorry to hear Jim say that, it was such a lowering of him. My conscience got to stirring me up hotter than ever, until at last I says to it, “Let up on me—it ain’t too late yet—I’ll paddle ashore at the first light and tell.” I felt easy and happy and light as a feather right off. All my troubles was gone.”
Due to the belief of racism, Huck believes that he is running off with stolen property so by deciding to return it, he feels much better. This whole scenario created by Twan sows how preposterous racism is, since it made people blind to the real world where no one is more superior to any one else. But because of this made up belief people know believe they are more highly superior just because of the skin color, which the whole idea is stupid and absurd

Jim mad at Huck’s prank
Pg 91
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
“My heart wuz mos’ broke bekase you wuz los’, en I didn’t k’yer no mo’ what become er me en de raf’. En when I wake up en fine you back agin’, all safe en soun’, de tears come en I could a got down on my knees en kiss’ yo’ foot I’s so thankful. En all you wuz thinkin ’bout wuz how you could make a fool uv ole Jim wid a lie.”
Through this quote, Jim suprises Huck by showing human emotions towards him, since due to the culture Huck grew up in, slaves are objects and they do not have emotions. Twain wants to show his readers how absurd racism made people because it makes Huck truley believe that the person he is traveling with inst a companion rather an obect he is carrying around.
