Daisy’s dialogue throughout the novel indicates that she is obsessed with money, as Gatsby points out in chapter seven “She’s got an indiscreet voice”. I remarked, “It’s full of- “ I hesitated. “Her voice is full of money” (Fitzgerald 120) Daisy is accustomed to living a lavish lifestyle, she has never wanted for anything because she has been provided for her whole life. Wealth can really bring out someone’s true identity, when problems arrive she simply buys her way out of it “ She vanished into her rich house, into her rich full life leaving gatsby nothing-” (Fitzgerald 142) Daisy had nothing to do with people who were not wealthy or in her social class.

As soon as Daisy was ready to get married she settled for the first person who crossed her path, and that was Tom Buchanan. And denies gatsby proposal because he is poor at the time. But marries Tom, who she really doesnt love but stays with him because he is rich and is able to provide her with many things. Daisy will do anything for money even if it means she must stay in a abusive relationship. “We all looked- the knuckle was black and blue. You did it Tom, she said accusingly. I know you didn’t mean to, but you did do it” (Fitzgerald) But Daisy enjoys having a wealthy and sociable husband. Daisy Buchanan also treats her daughter as a object, something you can show off. “I got dressed before luncheon, said the child, tuning eagery to Daisy. That’s because your mother wanted to show you off” (Fitzgerald 112) Their daughter, Pammy Buchanan is a symbol of materialism.

Tom Buchanan is a very arrogant character and is the antagonist of the novel. Tom has been unfaithful to Daisy since their honeymoon, “It was touching to see them together- it made you laugh in a hushes, fascinated way. That was in August. A week after i left Santa Barbara, Tom ran into a wagon on the Ventura road one night and ripped a front wheel off his car. The girl who was in the car with him got into the papers too because her arm was broken- she was one of the chambermaids in the Santa Barbara Hotel (Fitzgerald 143) but is also a hypocrite when it comes to love. Tom won’t let Daisy and Gatsby because he is scared they might have an affair. Tom is not only physically abusing daisy he is also emotionally abusing her as he is having these public affairs. Tom values only his possessions and social status “ Now don’t think my opinion on these matters is final,”he seemed to say “Just because im stronger and more of a man than you are” (Fitzgerald 7) Tom believed he was better than everyone because he was wealthy and part of a high social class, he was arrogant and believed he had everything any man could want. Tom Buchanan treated women as objects, and if it wasnt for wealth he would have nothing.

Tom and daisy despite all their hard ships are unable to leave each other because of their history and life they have made together but mainly because a divorce would shatter their social status. Their marriage is based on convenience, as they both had affairs outside their marriage. Both Tom and Daisy are described by Nick as restless and rich despite their marital problems and unhappiness “Why they came to the east i don’t know. They spent a year in france, for no particular reason, and then drifted here and unrestfully wherever people played polo and were rich together” (Fitzgerald 17) Tom and Daisy’s only worry was their image in society and how others perceive them. “ They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed things and creatures into their money or vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up their mess they had made” (Fitzgerald 146) Tom and Daisy both became ignorant to their actions because they were rich. They believed that their money or social status could get them out of any situation. They did not care if what they were doing was wrong or not, they had no consideration of others feelings or well being. And while they did not care for others they also did not care for each other “Daisy and Tom were sitting opposite each other at the kitchen table…They weren’t happy… yet they were not unhappy either. There was an unmistakable air of natural intimacy about the picture, and anybody would have said that they were conspiring together.” (Fitzgerald 131) Instead of loving each other they were simply tolerating each other, this defining their unstable marriage. Their relationship has been bad since the beginning if the novel and just continues to get worst, with the cheating going on between both characters they have both lost respect for one another.

Tom and Daisy were alike in many ways such as their wasn’t for wealth and selfish personality. They had no care for others feelings and only thought of themselves. The most they had in common was money, they were not in love with each other but were afraid to get a divorce because they might lose their social status. This relationship is a failure because it is based on materialism, not love.
