Capitalism System: David Harvey’s View Essay

David Harvey tries to convince the viewers that capitalism is a horrible system that leads humanity to self-destruction on a global scale. Harvey manages to achieve his goal as it is apparent that capitalism is the system associated with far too many issues. The sociologist also stresses that it is high time to change the system for the sake of humanity.

This is a very good idea. Nonetheless, one should think carefully about whether people are capable of developing a better system. Historically, people longed for a system to be guided by it. There are a variety of models that have already been tried. Remarkably, all these models are largely based on authority. More so, the power has often been in the hands of certain elites. In the past, those were monarchs, but now the power is distributed among larger groups.

There are political, social, ideological elites nowadays. Apart from this, there are military, governmental industrial leaders who win people’s trust. It is noteworthy that all of the models have proved to be corrupted as individuals have always tried to gain more power.

Besides, Harvey makes a valuable point that financiers are becoming more and more powerful. However, this means that society is not capitalistic as capitalism is associated with manufacturers and the relationship between them and workers. Capitalism has acquired a new form or transformed into a brand-new model. However, instead of defining the existing models, it may be more appropriate to start cooperation. People should work out new models to face global issues, such as environmental issues, natural disasters, etc.
