What is human need to establish an ideal world? This question deserves our deep consideration. Many people want the perfect Utopia world, but Brave New World and 1984 tell us that utopia is not necessarily as beautiful as imagined. In the beautiful new world, the controller said in his happy statement: ‘Of course it does. Actual happiness always looks pretty squalid in comparison with the over-compensations for misery. And, of course, stability isn’t nearly so spectacular as instability. And being contented has none of the glamour of a good fight against misfortune, none of the picturesqueness of a struggle with temptation, or a fatal overthrow by passion or doubt.

Happiness is never grand. ‘(Aldous246)

But John denied that happiness, he said : ‘I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness, I want sin.’.(Aldous163) By reading two dystopian novels, we realize that the true happiness is to pursue truth and freedom, not to let others to control our thoughts and force us to accept their rules.

The first point is isolation from the outside world. The “savages” in the Brave New World are enclosed in reservations, and people in the “civilized world” approach to them without special permission; the three countries in 1984 have no normal connection except wars.

The second point is to “destroy” natural human emotions. In the society described in the two novels, the concepts of love, marriage, and family are based on human emotions and are denied. In Brave New World, fertility does not need to depend on the womb. Sex is a normal ordinary entertainment. Exclusive love and sex are considered anti-social behavior. In 1984, the traditional family form is retained, but love is forbidden. If the government finds that two people are in love, they will never approve their marriage application because the only role of marriage is to fulfill the need of society, that is, raising the next generation .And for of family and friendship, people are encouraged to betrayal their colleagues, friends and even family members for the good of government.

The third point is to destroy personal privacy and control thought. The people in Brave new world have been brainwashed from birth to make them content with their class and work. 1984 people are constantly under the supervision of telescreen and think polices. No opposition to the government is allowed.

The fourth point is the destruction of history and books: 1984 and the society in the Brave New World destroyed all memorized, written and physical history. People without history are undoubtedly ignorant and easily domesticated. They also banned any other books. Brave New World mentions that when people hear the snippets of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ feel ridiculous and unreasonable. 1984 mentioned the use of new language to make the Declaration of Independence completely untranslatable and incomprehensible.

In the world depicted by both novels, rulers try to deprive people of their right to question. In order to create a stable society, we must avoid people’s doubts about the system, and people’s doubts come from their understanding of the world and their pursuit of the life they want. Concealing history and isolating the outside world is to prevent people from knowing the truth. Limiting emotions is to prevent people from being affected by emotions. Prevent people from opposing the system. The purpose of all restrictions is to make people a tool like gears that only contribute to the smooth development of society, not a living individual.

But people are not easy to be controlled, and there will be rebels anyway. For example, Winston in 1984 and John in the Brave New World. However, through their experience, we can see the cruelty of the utopian world: once a person has an independent mind, there is only tragedy waiting for them. John grew up in the ‘ barbarian reserve ‘ , received the primitive culture when he was young . The works of Shakespeare had a deep influence on him . His mind and thoughts were full of religion , loyalty , sacrifice and personal heroism . When Mustapha told him , ‘ but that’s the price we have to Pay for stability . You’ve got to choose between happiness and what people used to call high art . We’ve identified the high art . ‘ (Aldous151 ) ,John realized that in this world , harmony comes from freedom and faith. He thought he would rather not be happy than being forced to be happy by others . John is a staunch opponents .

He is a brave man with independent thoughts . But in the end , he still can’t change the world and chose to commit suicide . Winston,on the other hand, is a character in 1984 who work in “the ministry” of truth which works for edit the history to match with the through with the party and the “Big Brother”which is “War is peace, Freedom is slavery ,Ignorance is strength.” (George 6 ) . Although he works for the government, he gradually realized that the government’s behavior was incorrect and was contrary to human nature. But in the end, He was arrested and sent for punishment. After cruel torture gave up resistance and saying ‘I Love Big Brother’, ‘2 + 2 = 5’.(George 397)

These desperate roles are the author’s satire on the society they construct in the novel. Human resistance to such a utopia must mean that humans have lost something important, and its importance goes beyond the pursuit of a rich and harmonious life. And what exactly did humans lose in world like 1984 and Brave New World? The answer I gave was ‘the right to question.’ The society of 1984 has established a mechanism to prevent ‘question’ from the outside by use thought police to catch people with “wrong opinion” and force them to follow whatever Big Brother said, while Brave New World has established a self-restraint mechanism within the human mind through the conditional reflex training. Obviously, these measures are very necessary for a stable society. But they give people hopelessness by restrict them to persuade the life they want.

When people question existing reality, it often means the beginning of resistance and change. But at the same time, it is the resistance that sets each person apart from others as an individual. When people are required to be absolutely obedient, they are essentially deprived of their right to exist as independent individuals, which is devastating to the individual.
